Oh dear (continued)....

As Wayne Rooney left the pitch following England's (very) disappointing 0-0 draw against Algeria, he turned to the television cameras and sarcastically commented: "it's nice to see your own fans booing you."
England 0-0 Algeria

This is a tough one to answer. I usually disagree with booing your own players and/or team. The fans should support the team through thick & thin. Booing them won't achieve anything.

But - after watching last night on TV what must rank one of the worst ever performances by an England football team, I can understand those fans' frustration.

At Manchester United, Wayne Rooney reportedly earns £90,000 per week (due to go up on his next contract) and approx £760,000 per year in image rights. He also picks up from Nike a reported £1million per year.

Some of those fans in South Africa have saved up or taken out loans in these times of economic hardship to follow an England team who simply failed to play to their full ability last night. So Mr Rooney shouldn't be suprised to hear booing after such an abject performance.

PS: four years ago, in this very blog, I commented after watching England eventually defeat the mighty Trinidad & Tobago in the last World Cup:

"England continues to struggle against opposition they were expected to cruise past."

Sadly nothing appears to have changed...
