Tiger Woods Accident Tiger Woods Pictures

Tiger Woods has been the source of much attention and speculation since he crashed his car the day after Thanksgiving. Why do you think that story has attracted intense interest? Does he have a right to privacy?

After Tiger Woods crashed his car, there has been a lot of gossip about Woods and his family. Though he initially maintained silence about the event and the rumors and reports about him, The Times reported that Woods posted a statement on his Web site:

But no matter how intense curiosity about public figures can be, there is an important and deep principle at stake which is the right to some simple, human measure of privacy,” he wrote. “I realize there are some who don’t share my view on that. But for me, the virtue of privacy is one that must be protected in matters that are intimate and within one’s own family. Personal sins should not require press releases and problems within a family shouldn’t have to mean public confessions.

Happy Thanksgiving!

To those across the pond, enjoy your turkeys....

The Buffyverse on Sci-Fi channel...

In an older post, I complained about how the Sci-Fi channel censored episodes of "Angel" before the so-called watershed.
Well one can now watch the unexpurgated episodes after midnight, which is a step in the right direction, but it sucks having to wait until approx 1am in the morning.
It's also nice to see "Buffy" now showing on the same channel.
Shows on Sci-Fi UK

However, while I like Buffy, the series always felt like a soap-opera-with-vampires (and other assorted ghoulies). To me, Angel had the superior storylines (and deserved a better fate than cancellation).
My fave moments on Angel?

  1. Angel is transformed into a puppet ("Smile Time")
  2. Wesley shooting a Wolfram & Hart employee, who complains that too much company time is spent trying to save Fred's life ("A Hole in the World")
  3. Lorne: "So it's an evil limo. I get that, but does that mean we don't restock the cherries?" ("Home")
  4. Angel smothers Wes with a pillow, shouting "You're a dead man, Pryce. YOU HEAR ME?!?! DEAD!" ("Forgiving")
  5. The newly-enhanced Gunn walks into the court room, getting a mistrial declared ("Conviction")

Iraq - the inquiry...

The British government's claim that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) is being discussed by the official inquiry into the war. So fat it's been reported that the UK had intelligence days before the Iraq war that Saddam might not be able to use chemical weapons, according to a senior adviser.

Furthermore, Sir William Ehrman, the Foreign Office's director general for defence and intelligence between 2002 and 2004, said the UK investigated claims of links between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda but decided they were not "natural allies",

The inquiry is not expected to report its full findings until 2011.
The key points of the Iraq war inquiry explained

The British public's trust in politics is at its lowest ebb - the whole, unadulterated truth has to come out, regardless of its impact on Tony Blair and the government...

Real Madrid retain Cristiano Ronaldo hope

Real Madrid & Cristiano Ronaldo
Ramon Calderon, the Real Madrid president, has not given up hope of signing Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, and says he is biding his time while Manchester United and the player resolve their "argument".

Ronaldo has made no secret of his desire to join Real Madrid and even likened his situation at Old Trafford to that of a slave in a recent television interview after suggesting that United were holding him against his wishes.

Sir Alex Ferguson has continually criticised Real's pursuit of the player and United have even reported the matter to Fifa however, Calderon insists his club are little more than spectators.

"Look, this is a problem that wasn't created by Real Madrid," he said. "Madrid are just spectators in this soap opera. At the moment Manchester United and the player are in an argument and Madrid are waiting...and we can't do any more for the time being.

"Obviously, it's clear that we want Cristiano with the quality that he has. But there is a contractual problem that United and the player have to resolve, not us.

"Will he persuade the club to let him go? I can't say that. That question's for the player, who has publicly said his dream is to play for Madrid.

"We hear those words with pride and satisfaction, but his departure doesn't only depend on Cristiano. United are the ones that have to sort it out and it will either happen or not."

"I would like to remind everyone that Madrid didn't generate this expectation but the player himself. The club has been respectful. We didn't blow this all up. The club at which I'm president sleeps with a clear conscience."

Ronaldo, who is recovering from ankle surgery, is yet to return to Manchester, but Calderon believes when he finally does it could force a resolution.

"It could happen then, but it's true that we have to wait developments," he said. "Everyone's thinking so much about this matter that people can get confused and I understand that they're fed up.

"They (United and Ronaldo) will talk next week and if after this conversation United decide to sell him, then of course Madrid will be there."

Some reports have suggested Real would be forced to sell Robinho to accomodate the Portugal international, however, Calderon insists both players can play in the same team.

"The coaches believe they (Ronaldo and Robinho) are compatible and Madrid don't need to raise funds to buy," he said. "To sign Cristiano we don't need to sell anyone and even less so Robinho. It's not like that at all.

"I don't have any reason to think that Robinho is unhappy. Schuster adores him, his team-mates want him and last year he was very happy at the Bernabeu.

"If he wasn't happy and wanted to leave we wouldn't fight to change his mind. But I don't think that's the case. It's absurd to plan someone's transfer if they're happy and I firmly believe that."

2012

Saw the movie over the weekend. My rating:

  • 8 out of 10 for the CGI

  • 3 out of 10 for the plot

  • overall, 5.5 out of 10 for the movie
*** Warning! This comment may contain spoilers ***

Yep, leave those brain cells at home and be amazed by the special effects, as Roland Emmerich goes for the mother and father of all apocalypses in one movie!
Forget Earthquake, The Poseidon Adventure and Volcano - now you can watch all these disasters in 2012 instead!
It's predictable tosh, but what did you expect from the man who gave us Independence Day & The Day After Tomorrow? Treat 2012 for what it is - a guilty pleasure to pass the time away.
The film fails with its characters - too cliche, spouting cliches. And even in a movie like this, I couldn't believe how many last-minute escapes our heroic cast (John Cusack, Amanda Peet) were able to pull off. Also don't look to this movie for any in-depth examination of the Mayan calendar.
Finally in case you're wondering, the London Olympics gets cancelled (it IS the end of the world, after all). Thanks, Mr. Emmerich - that's our £10 billion gone up in smoke...literally!

Football, football, football (continued)...

Obviously I don't usually comment when Tottenham win a football match, but in the midst of the media hoopla surrounding the Spuds 9-1 demolition of Wigan Athletic, one should pay a closer look at the sole Wigan goal.
This came courtesy of Wigan midfielder Paul Scharner, who controlled the ball with his arm before scoring.
Surely Scharner's goal was as dodgy as his haircut. OK - it didn't decide the outcome of the game, but shouldn't Scharner be condemned for dragging football into the gutter?
No doubt Wigan Athletic would graciously offer to replay the fixture....

More Samantha Fox...

Former glamour model Samantha Fox has revealed on reality TV show "I'm A Celebrity" that she is worried her boobs are shrinking.

Does Jelena Jankovic Deserve To Be Number One In Women’s Tennis?

I just heard the shocking news that Jelena Jankovic won the International Tennis Federation’s player of the year award. Jankovic definitely had a solid 2008 she reached her first grand slam final at the US OPEN this year and the semifinals in Australia and the French Open. Jankovic is currently the number one female tennis player. However, Jelena Jankovic also is not a champion she hasn’t won a grand slam singles title yet.

I am confident Jelena will win a grand slam eventually she is just too talented not to. How can Jankovic be the ITF female player of the year when she did not win a grand slam in 2008? Grand slam singles titles separate the champions from the wannabe champions. Jelena is obviously a solid player but she does not deserve this award. It appears to me this is another snub against the Williams Sisters.

The WTA computer rankings value quantity over quality it is obvious Serena Williams had a superior year then Jankovic.

However, grand slam titles are the jewels of tennis therefore I don’t believe she deserves to win the International Tennis Federation player of the year award. It is obvious that Serena Williams should of won the ITF player of the year award. Serena won the US OPEN, she was a finalist at Wimbledon and she also won tier I titles in Charleston and Miami. Serena has a winning record over all her rivals except her older sister Venus.

Ana Ivanovic and Maria Sharapova started out 2008 strongly but both women fizzled in the second half of the year due to injuries. Sharapova has a chronic shoulder problem she says she will be ready to defend her title at the Australian Open in January 2009. Ana Ivanovic I am not that impressed with her. I think Ivanovic was able to win the French Open this year because Justine Henin retired from women’s tennis. I still don’t understand why Henin retired she is only twenty five she is still in her prime. The media talk about Henin’s mental strength but I actually think Henin is very fragile she doesn’t take losing very well. Henin tends to be a quitter she just can’t handle pressure and she burned out.

The Williams Sisters are the only women from their generation still at the top of women’s tennis. The Belgians Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin retired, Martina Hingis quit due to controversy over drug use, Davenport is pregnant again, and Amelie Mauresmo is fading. Venus and Serena’s strategy of playing a limited schedule helped them obtain longevity. Serena and Venus also won grand slam singles titles in 2008.

Venus won Wimbledon and the WTA Championships. The Williams Sisters are the best players of their generation when they are serious. There doesn’t seem to be any new players that can crack the top of the womens’ game and no one is dominating women’s tennis right now at the top. 2009 should be interesting I still feel that Serena Williams is the best when she is motivated and serious. I expect Serena to do well in 2009 if she is injury free.

The damnation of Thierry Daniel Henry......

"I will be honest, it was a handball. But I'm not the ref. I played it, the ref allowed it. That's a question you should ask him."
Thierry Henry

Both Fifa and the French Football Federation have rejected the Football Association of Ireland's request for a replay of the controversial World Cup play-off between France and the Republic of Ireland,
The Republic of Ireland were beaten 2-1 on aggregate after France triumphed with a goal scored when captain Thierry Henry handled the ball in the build-up.
Fifa turns down Irish replay plea

OK: Wednesday night Thierry Henry used his hand to control the ball, and France's equalising goal shouldn't have stood. But Fifa has spoken - the match will NOT be replayed. Furthermore, the French Football Federation has no intention of proposing a replay.
As Fifa has stated: "during matches, decisions are taken by the referee and these decisions are final."
End of story.

But the usual (over) reaction by the British press has been deplorable. In their myopic eyes, Thierry Henry has now been permanently tainted as a cheating, dirty footballer, who has no right to participate in "the beautiful game" - despite Henry's admission that he handled the ball, and despite his (somewhat belated) plea that replaying the World Cup play-off would be "the fairest solution."

Earlier this year, Robbie Keane helped the Republic of Ireland come from behind to beat Georgia 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier, by scoring a penalty in the 73rd minute, after an amazingly harsh handball decision against defender Ucha Lobjanidze.
However I don't recall any clamor in the press over the injustice to Georgia. Luck of the Irish, I guess...
Republic of Ireland 2-1 Georgia

Don't get me wong - as I stated in previous posts (during the Eduardo media witch-hunt), if a footballer is guilty of cheating, then he should be judged accordingly.
But in a year when we've seen fake blood in rugby matches, choreographed Formula One crashes, and an eight-time Grand Slam winner revealing he misled the tennis authorities about his use of crystal methamphetamine, watching the moral outrage over Henry's handball makes me want to reach for the sick-bucket...

President Tony Blair? Non!

Belgian PM Herman van Rompuy is the EU president and the UK's Labour peer Baroness Catherine Ashton is the surprise choice as foreign policy chief.

Mr van Rompuy, 62, backed by France and Germany, was the unanimous choice after the UK dropped its support for Tony Blair.
EU foreign head dismisses critics

In my opinion anyone would have been better than Tony Blair, I've had my fill of charismatic, media-savvy leaders.
However a more transparent decision making process could have been used to elect the President of the European Council.

Doctor Who (continued)...

Just a few words on the latest Doctor Who special, " The Waters Of Mars."

At long last - a special episode that lives up to its description!
The countdown to the Doctor's demise has begun, and doesn't he knows it, as he lands on Mars, and meets the ill-fated first human outpost on the red planet, Bowie Base One (cute touch by the writers). The date is 21st November 2059, the day everyone on Bowie Base One dies, and the Doctor knows this. But can he change history? More importantly, should he?
This is David Tennant's Doctor at his darkest, as the "Time Lord Victorious" - his absolute power corrupts him absolutely, and the Doctor is shown to be as megalomaniacal as the Master (which sets up nicely for Tennant's finale as the tenth Doctor),
I'm not going to quibble about the flaws. Overall, this episode was brilliant - now roll on the Christmas special, The End Of Time!
