A modern Greek tragedy...


EU leaders have reached a deal on helping Greece tackle its debt crisis, EU President Herman Van Rompuy says. However no specific promise of aid has been made.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said that Greece "will not be left on its own, but there are rules and these rules must be adhered to".

Greece's debt crisis has put pressure on the euro, which has taken a beating over the past month. Indeed the currency fell back today (after making initial gains) once European traders quickly surmised that the EU announcement was only an accord in principle, with most of the costly details still to be worked out.
