Louisiana’s annual back-to-school states sales tax holiday will take place Friday and Saturday. Eligible items will be exempt from the state’s 4 percent sales tax.
Though the sales tax holiday is geared to accommodate parents of schoolchildren, the majority of all consumer purchases are exempt from the 4 percent tax during the two-day period. The sales tax holiday exempts the first $2,500 of the purchase price of each eligible item.
Local sales taxes still apply.
The Louisiana Department of Revenue encourages shoppers to retain receipts for school supplies, uniforms and educational equipment required. Those items will be eligible for deductions on 2011 state income tax filings.
On the horizon: The state will have its three-day Second Amendment tax holiday Sept. 2-4. Guns, ammunition and hunting supplies are among the items that will be exempt from state sales tax.
