Obama saves the WORLD...

...er, no he hasn't, really.

But I'm still scratching my head over the decision by the Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee to awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Barack Obama, less than 1 year into his presidency of the United States.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the Norwegian committee said in a statement.
"His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

Obama has said he was "surprised and deeply humbled" to be the recipient of the Peace Prize.
Nobel prize win 'humbles' Obama

I would have selected either Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai or a posthumous award to Iranian Neda Agha-Soltan.
In effect Obama was nominated because of his intentions, not his deeds. I've stated previously of my hopes for Obama, but for him to be awarded the Peace Prize smells suspiciously like bandwagon-jumping, and I fear this could prove counter-productive.

According to the BBC, Obama won because he's not President George W Bush and has steered American foreign policy, or at least its strategy if not its aims, in an opposite direction.

I also think Obama won because he's not Dubya - but does that make it right?
