The World Cup (as predicted by Paul)...

Germany's "psychic" octopus, Paul, has become a worldwide celebrity for his reported ability to accurately predict the outcome of football matches. and has now plumped for Spain to take the title in tomorrow's final. Paul, from the Sea Life Aquarium in the western German city of Oberhausen, has also predicted Germany will beat Uruguay today, taking third place in the tournament.

Thus far, Paul has correctly forecasted the result of six of Germany's World Cup games, including their semi-final defeat, which apparently led to calls in Germany for Paul to be roasted with lemon juice and olive oil or turned into a plate of paella! Nicolas Bedorrou, an Argentinian chef, has also threatened to cook the octopus in retribution after Paul correctly predicted that Germany would beat Argentina in the quarter-final.

"The 'Paul Effect' has turned the betting on its head with more punters backing Spain since the famous octopus gave his verdict," said a spokesman for Paddy Power bookies.

Bookmakers are also taking bets on whether Paul the octopus will be successful in forecasting the correct result for the World Cup final. Apparently if someone had placed a £10 accumulator bet on all of Paul's predictions being correct, they would have won £1,426 by this point.
