Goodbye to the London Paper...

The evening freesheet the London Paper, launched in September 2006, will appear on our streets tomorrow for the final time.

Publisher News International announced last month that the paper was to close with the loss of 60 editorial staff, after it recorded a pre-tax loss of £12.9 million in the year to June 29 2008 on a turnover of £14.1 million. In the previous 10 months it had lost £16.8m. The London Paper had a free distribution of 500,348 copies in July, about 100,000 more than its afternoon freesheet rival from Associated Newspapers, London Lite.

James Murdoch, chairman and chief executive Europe and Asia for News Corporation - News International's parent company - said the paper's performance had fallen short of expectations. Mr Murdoch added that News International wanted to concentrate on its main publications - The Sun, The Times, the News Of The World and The Sunday Times.

I was surprised to learn of the demise of the London Paper, since I'd considered it a superior freesheet to the London Lite (which in my opinion wasn't worth the paper it was printed on).
I bet Transport for London won't miss the paper though, judging from the large quantities left behind every night on the tube trains and at their stations...
